Reading: The best educational tool. Don’t let it bug you.

I have a few students who don’t like reading. Above all, I do everything conceivable to get them excited about reading and learning. Nothing helps writing skills more than reading. Great literature teaches syntax, or word order in endless ways. Stories improve vocabulary, show students the correct connotation for words, and subtle threads teach inference skills, all of which are critical for reading and writing. Literacy skills in North America are at an all time low. Reading is miraculous- translating arbitrary symbols into juicy, meaningful words is fascinating in itself.

How can I get my child to read? Start with graphic novels and slowly wean the child onto solid material. I recommend books such as The Lightning Thief which is very popular with middle school students. See my recommended reading list for high school students, and don’t hesitate to contact me for help!
